New Thinking About Nursing Workspaces and Single-Bed Rooms in Adult Acute Hospitals Wards

As the design of hospitals responds to changing models of care and emergent technologies, the spaces used by nursing staff for much of their working time need to accommodate these developments.  These environments need to stay ahead of the curve, and responsive to the latest evidence and research.  To this end, the EuHPN webinar on 23rd May 2025 will focus on the recent work of three organisations, to better understand the future of the nursing workstation, the role of simulation and prototyping in improving nursing environments, and recent thinking about single-bed patient rooms.

We have an outstanding group of speakers for this webinar, from The webinar will welcome:

  • Dr Nirit Pilosof, Faculty member at Tel Aviv University and the Head of Research in Healthcare Transformation at Sheba Medical Center, Israel.

  • Dr Emma Zijlstra, a senior researcher at the Research Centre for Built Environment and Innovation Lab Health Design Space, both part of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, in Groningen, Netherlands.

  • Dr. Monika Codourey, Rahel Inauen, and Lena Sunier from the Swiss Center for Design and Health (SCDH).

We look forward to welcoming you at our webinar on 23 May 2025

Further information about our speakers and topics

Dr Nirit Pilosof

Dr Nirit Pilosof, a faculty member at Tel Aviv University and the Head of Research in Healthcare Transformation at Sheba Medical Center in Israel, will present the results of the international design competition, The Nurse Station of the Future, led by ARC Innovation at Sheba MC.  Nirit will discuss the purpose of the design competition, outline the key features of the winning submissions, and share her insights on the challenges of integrating innovation in digital technology and healthcare design.

Dr Emma Zijlstra

Dr Emma Zijlstra, a senior researcher in Evidence-Based Design at the Research Centre for Built Environment and Innovation Lab Health Design Space, both part of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, in Groningen, Netherlands.  Emma’s research is broadly in the field of the impact of the hospital environment on the human experience and well-being. In this webinar she will focus on research concerning potential adaptations to single-bed inpatient rooms, and how this can improve patient well-being.

Dr. Monika Codourey, Rahel Inauen, and Lena Sunier

Dr. Monika Codourey, Rahel Inauen, and Lena Sunier from the Swiss Center for Design and Health (SCDH) will present their latest approach to tailoring future nursing environments to the requirements of individual hospital design projects.  Monika is a Healthcare Architect leading strategic innovation at SCDH’s Living Lab.  Rahel is Project Lead Research, focusing on evidence-based design and actively involving stakeholders to improve care environments.  Lena develops simulation tools and prototypes as Product Development Manager. Together, they combine strategic, research-based, and practical design perspectives to shape more effective and human-centered healthcare environments.
